Rapid Java Application Development Using JBuilder 4/5/6 (2nd Edition)

Author: Y. Daniel Liang
Average review score:

Rapid Java Application Development Using JBuilder 4/5/6 (2nd
I have used many beginner-to-intermediate books on Java, but this has always been the best one I could find as a reference for GUI-related topics. It has excellent, practical examples on layouts, colors, and constructing basic GUIs. It's been the one book that I end up having on my desktop when I start any new GUI.

Rapid Java Application Development Using JBuilder 4/5/6
This book fills in a niche market between an OOP theory book and an advanced Java reference book. It shows you how to apply OOP and use Java for rapid application development. If you know basic of Java and want to use JBuilder for RAD, this book will help you.

Rapid Java Application Development
Daniel Liang is one of the most reliable Java authors and this book for advanced programmers, who already know Java, is unique. It allows programmers to progress rapidly and use JBuilder's built in tools for creating state of the art Java programs quickly. Shows how to use Java Beans. It also comes with JBuilder.

Rapid Psychological Assessment
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (15 June, 1998)
Authors: Jason T. Olin and Carolyn Keatinge
Average review score:

Excellent book on psych. testing
As a therapist who supervises social workers at a center for emotionally disturbed children, I have to read and understand psychological tests. This book is lucid, well-written, covers a lot of ground regarding most of the tests. It has been a great help.

The Cliff Notes of assessment texts
This book is one of the handiest resources I have seen. As a clinician with an assessment practice, I used to have a couple of bulky texts that contained a lot of superfluous information. What I like about this book, is that it gives really clear descriptions of the tests I use, and lots of shortcuts to interpretation.

The text is set up in a straightforward manner. The first section, which is quite brief, reads like an assessment primer. It covers the key issues regarding assessment (e.g., how to choose the tests you give). The second section reviews the major psychological tests given today (WAIS-III, WISC-III, MMPI-2, etc), with one chapter for adults and another for child. What is really useful is that it gives solid clinical interpretation, and isn't filled with outdated material. I also like that the authors were frank about the tests' strengths and weaknesses. The third section covers the most common diagnostic categories, and provides suggested test findings. What I thought was most helpful here was that the authors considered the reality of diagnostic vagueries. Thus, depression, anxiety, and somatoform disorders are considered together because they share comorbidity.

The rest of the book is a brief chapter on report writing, and an appendix that includes MMPI-2 code type interpretations, websites for test publishers, etc.

What's interesting to me, too, is that the book has a broad appeal. I have been asking the students that I supervise to use the book, and I find that their approach to assessment is more sophisticated as a result.

An excellent clinician's handbook on psychological testing
This is book is great because it provides really clear information on all of the best psych tests, including the WAIS-III and WMS-III. I also like that it includes test results for children and older adults, not just adults. It's short and sweet, and small enough to take with me when I see patients.

Rapid Testing
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (29 December, 2001)
Authors: Robert Culbertson, Chris Brown, and Gary Cobb
Average review score:

Excellent handbook for Exploratory/Rapid Testing
I am the Exploratory/Rapid test lead for Manpower Managed Service that is contracted to do the HP LaserJet R&D testing. I have over 3 years of hands on experience in this capacity and had a conserable amount of training from Satisfice.

Exploratory and Rapid based testing differ from the more accepted automated system test infrastructure because tests are developed, executed and evaluated in real time by the test technician, this form of testing is extremely valuable and finds a great many defects and is best used in conjunction with automated regression and feature tests.

Because one person is doing what 3 people normally are tasked with the person must develop excellent critical thinking skills as well as the ability toe recognize and work around their own biases.

This book covers many of the important aspects of Exploratory/Rapid Based testing in a fun and easy to read way, the layout of the book is excellent.

Great Lessons
This book is great, it teaches you great lessons on software testing

Viable process that does not compromise quality
Rapid Testing
This book provides a testing process and associated techniques that adds the agility required to meet fast-paced business requirements without sacrificing the due diligence or controls necessary to manage risk.

There is nothing especially new about the processes or techniques that the author proposes and explains; however, the way the processes are designed recasts tried and true methods into a streamlined process. Indeed, if the rapid testing process is correctly implemented it's possible to reduce testing cycle time while *improving* quality. I like the way the author begins by clearly defining terms. I know from experience that "acceptance test" means one thing in one organization, and something quite different in another. What I especially like, though, is the clear process itself, which consists of four major elements, each of which is thoroughly addressed in the book: (1) people, (2) integrated test process, (3) static testing and (4) dynamic testing.

Another key strength of this book is the way the traditional (and much maligned) waterfall model is transformed into a hybrid called a parallel waterfall. This hybrid model is the best of the waterfall and V model, and like the V model, it tightly integrates testing and development. The author's approach to activity-input-output in the discussion of life cycle models is close to the entry-task-validation-exit process model, and the structure that is presented allows you to develop a process chain that produces predictable and repeatable results. This approach is partially why the testing process can be rapid without compromising quality or ignoring risks.

In Part II the book provides tips and techniques. Again, there is nothing especially new, but all of the key techniques are covered, including requirements and analysis, test planning, executing and reporting. Black box testing is covered well, as are an array of dynamic testing techniques (equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, memory leak testing, use case testing and performance tests.) If you're in a Microsoft-centric environment you'll appreciate the material on memory leak testing, and if you are in a development environment that employs UML or the Rational Unified Process the techniques for use case testing will prove helpful.

Part III provides detailed examples that are based on material presented in Part II. Overall this book lives up to its title by providing a 'safe' and effective process for rapid testing.

Shepherdess: Notes from the Field
Published in Paperback by Purdue University Press (October, 1995)
Author: Joan Jarvis Ellison
Average review score:

Pondering making a change to the "simple" life? A must read
As my husband and I were pondering our move from City to Country Life, this book was given to us as a gift, and we found it to be an absolute joy! The short chapters make it amazingly easy to pick up for short reading spurts. Each chapter tells it's own story of Joan's sometimes hilarious, sometimes frightening, but always entertaining adventures from biochemist to shepherdess. Her willingness to poke fun at her obvious naivety regarding sheep is refreshing. Everyone we've loaned our book to has found it very entertaining. You'll be amazed at what you learn about sheep! (We now have our own flock of 25 ... be careful!)

An intelligent, funny, personal, moving, poetic book...
I am here to buy this book for my mom. Though she is the furthest thing from a shepardess, this is a great book for anyone who enjoys honest accounts of personal growth. The stories within this book speak of life on a lot of levels - the intellectual life of a mother, the daily physical challenges of the farm, the relationships people have with animals, and the personal goals of an individual. These greater themes are communicated through beautiful, funny, visceral, and heart-wrenching stories. At the very least, you will have a new perspective on sheep! All in all, it is a moving, entertaining, and intellectually stimulating book. A pretty quick read too - I imagine the short chapters with self contained stories would make it an ideal book for the traveler.

A humorous, self depreciating tale of transition
Shepherdess is a delightful book that kept me laughing throughout, it reminds me of the James Herriots "All Things Bright and Beautiful." In this true story Joan tells of the transition from research biochemistry to shepherdess with all the changes of image, the loss of romance and the discovery of self. Tis is a great book to read aloud and share the laughter. While there is information that would be helpful for someone looking to make this transition, it' really a good read for everyone.

A must have for every college student!
It's been 5 years since I graduated from college. I recently found this book in one of my storage boxes--and had to write a review because it helped me so much!

This book was truly useful for me. Like the other reviewer, I wish I had knew about it during my freshman year. The book has some very practical and easy-to-adopt tips on studying and getting motivated (with lots of research to back-up those tips, for skeptics).

I really enjoyed it becuase of it's earnest, helpful tone. Very easy to read too. Highly recommended!

Hot Tips!
Ah! Where was this book when I was a freshman? B's and A's offers a plan to raise grades that took me almost an entire college career to discover. A must have for any student (even seniors). If you like this book, you'll love "Major in Success." The invaluable tips are worth their weight in GOLD.

A great read for all Grand Rapidians

"Greater Grand Rapids: A City that Works" tops my list! It is a unique look into life in Grand Rapids as Gerald R. Ford experienced it. You will find this book in the reception area of many businesses in the Greater Grand Rapids area, most likely because the pictures are exceptionally vivid, capturing the essence of city life. It is a great coffee table book and conversation piece!

Excellent View of Grand Rapids

Large Group Interventions : Engaging the Whole System for Rapid Change
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (January, 1997)
Authors: Barbara Benedict Bunker and Billie T. Alban
Average review score:

Best Single Resource on Using Groups to Make Change
Think of this as a reference work on major strategies for making change in organizations. Bunker and Alban give clear overviews of well-tested methods at three levels: strategic planning, smaller group level, and individual job level.

At the strategic level, for example, you can compare Future Search, Search Conference, Real Time Strategic Change and other approaches to help decide which might best suit a specific situation.

Bunker and Alban also provide references on each approach, so you can get more specific information.

My only complaint is that there should probably be a revised edition one of these days to keep up with new resources.

Excellent book for practioner and "lay" person alike
Although parts of this book are aimed at the practioner, Bunker and Alban are so clear and straightforward in theory and example that their book is invaluable for anyone committed to innovative, effective organizational learning and growth.
